Creative and Performing Arts Selective Streams

The Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Selective Stream caters for gifted and talented students of Circus, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.

CAPA Ensemble students are provided with the opportunity to develop their talents with like-minded peers as a part of a specialist program, nurturing their future goals through the CAPA learning progressions framework. 

To enrol in the Creative and Performing Arts Selective Streams at Granville South CAPA High School, applicants must be successful in their audition process. 

Audition Process:

Round 1: Online Video Audition

Should your child be successful in the First Round of Video Auditions, you will be contacted by email by mid Term 2 with the date and time of Round 2: Live Audition.

Round 2:  Live Audition

Only students who were successful from Round 1: Online Video Auditions will be invited to Round 2: Live Auditions, which includes a studio audition workshop.

Round 1: Online Video Audition

Requirements:

  1. Students are to present a 2 minute video showcasing acro/gymnastic floor solo. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (Full Name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Circus).
  2. Students should be dressed in appropriate circus attire or a costume representative of the performance  (please see below). 
  3. Students' full body must be fully visible in the video at all times. 
  4. Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for the audition. 

Round 1 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate Circus attire:

  • Unitard, leotard, tights (preferably covering knees) 
  • No jewellery
  • Hair tied back

Round 2: Live Audition

Requirements

Students will take part in a teacher-lead workshop:

  • Floor tumbling 
  • Acrobatics
  • Floor based circus 
  • Floor Gymnastics 

Round 2 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate Circus attire:

  • Unitard, leotard, tights (preferably covering knees). 
  • No jewellery
  • Hair tied back

General Criteria that students will be assessed on for Circus are:

  • Strength, flexibility & co-ordination
  • Technical ability and performance quality

Round 1: Online Video Audition

Requirements:

  1. Present a 2 minute solo dance in the student's choice of style. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (Full Name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Dance).
  2. When filming the performance, ensure the space is suitable for movement in a well lit environment.
  3. Students’ full body must be fully visible in the video at all times.
  4. Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (no costumes - please see below).
  5. Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for audition.

Round 1 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:

  • Girls : leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt
  • Boys : track pants and a t-shirt.
  • No jewellery
  • Hair tied back and off the face

Round 2: Live Audition

Requirements

Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:

  • Teacher lead warm-up
  • Discussion and demonstration of technical skills

Round 2 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:

  • Girls : leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt.
  • Boys : track pants and a t-shirt.
  • No jewellery.
  • Hair tied back and off the face.

General Criteria that students will be assessed on for Dance are:

  • Performance quality.
  • Technical ability including demonstrated awareness of safe dance practice. 
  • Self-discipline and commitment.
  • Ability to respond to teacher feedback.
  • Confidence and presentation.

Round 1: Online Video Audition

Requirements:

  1. Present a 2 minute scripted monologue from a book or a play. (No poetry, please).  Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (Full Name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Drama).
  2. Ensure audio quality of the video is clear and that the camera is stationary (no zooming in and out). 
  3. Record the audition in a room with neutral acoustics (not a large hall or outside).
  4. Student’s full body must be fully visible in the video at all times .
  5. Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (please see below). 
  6. Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for audition.

Round 1 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate Circus attire:

  • Drama Blacks
  • Character appropriate costume

Round 2: Live Audition

Requirements

Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:

  • Teacher-lead workshop exploring drama games and improvisation.

Round 2 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate Drama attire:

  • Applicants should wear comfortable clothing. 
  • Footwear should be track shoes or bare feet.

General Criteria that students will be assessed on for Drama are:

  • Self-discipline, Concentration and Focus.
  • Movement skills.
  • Co-operation, creativity and imagination.
  • Ability to respond to teacher feedback.
  • Performance quality of scripted presentation.

Round 1: Online Video Audition

Requirements:

  1. Record a 2 minute video of a live vocal  or instrumental (Guitar, Piano, Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion/Drums) performance. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (Full Name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Music).
  2. This can be accompanied or unaccompanied.
  3. If accompanied, ensure the balance between the soloist and the accompaniment is correct.
  4. Ensure audio quality of the video is clear.
  5. Record the audition in a room with neutral acoustics (not a large hall or outside).
  6. Student’s full body must be fully visible in the video at all times. 
  7. Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (please see below).
  8. Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for audition.

Round 1 Audition Attire

Appropriate performance attire for your style of music or smart casual.

Round 2: Live Audition

Requirements

Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:

  • Warm-up exercises to demonstrate technical skill. 
  • Singing a cappella and aurally identifying vocal passages.
  • Simple improvisation over 12 bar blues.
  • Perform a short, prepared song.

Round 2 Audition Attire

Appropriate performance attire for your style of music or smart casual. Current school uniform is acceptable.

General Criteria that students will be assessed on for Music are:

  • Performance quality.
  • Technique, including intonation, rhythmic accuracy.
  • Dynamics and expressive techniques including phrasing and articulation.
  • Ability to respond to teacher feedback.

Round 1: Online Video Audition

Requirements:

  1. Record a video 3-6 minutes presenting a portfolio of your artworks including at least 5 contrasting pieces. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Visual Arts).
  2. These artworks may be paintings, drawings, sculpture or ceramics.
  3. Record the audition video in a quiet room (not a large hall or outside).
  4. Please review the audition video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for audition.

Presentation

Students should answer the following questions:

  • What materials and processes / techniques have been used to produce their artworks?
  • What ideas are being explored in their artworks?

Round 1 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate attire for Visual Arts presentation.

Round 2: Live Audition

Requirements

Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:

  • Students will be interviewed by the audition panel and asked to discuss the work included in their portfolio in detail.

Round 2 Audition Attire

Students should wear appropriate attire for Visual Arts. Current school uniform is acceptable.

General Criteria that students will be assessed on for Visual Arts are:

  • Quality and diversity of technical skill presented in the portfolio. 
  • General knowledge of art. 
  • Creativity and innovation. 
  • Confidence and ability to respond to teacher feedback.

Requirements for Round 1: Online Video Audition

  • Round 1 Audition Videos are to be submitted to Granville South CAPA High School via YouTube.
  • You must create a Google account, then a YouTube channel, to which the video will be uploaded. 
  • The video visibility setting should be set to unlisted so that the video can be shared with Granville South CAPA High School but will not appear in YouTube search results.

How to upload your audition video to YouTube

  1. Go to www.youtube.com. 
  2. Log in to your YouTube account.
  3. Click on the video icon at the top right-hand side of the window
  4. Click ‘Upload video.’
  5. Press ‘select files to upload’ to find the video file saved on your computer or simply ‘drag and drop’ the video file to the window.
  6. Details - You need to ‘Title’ your video in the following format:
    • Full name
    • CAPA specific area you are audition for - Circus, Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts
    • GSCAPAHS Audition
  7. Audience – Ensure you click the radio button, ‘Yes, it’s made for kids’.
  8. Click Next video elements will be displayed (not required), click Next again.
  9. Visibility - Ensure the visibility setting is set to unlisted, then save.

Please note:

When your video has been successfully uploaded you will receive a URL for your video. 

Please copy the URL and paste it into the online application form in the required field.

If the URL does not work, we will contact you via email and ask you to resubmit.
