Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Selective Stream enrolment
The Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Selective Stream at Granville South caters for gifted and talented students of Dance Contemporary, Drama, Drumming, Asian Dance, Middle Eastern Dance, Music, Pasifika Dance and Vocal and Visual Arts.
CAPA Ensemble students are provided with the opportunity to develop their talents with like-minded peers as a part of a specialist program, nurturing their future goals through the CAPA learning progressions framework.
To enrol in the CAPA Selective Streams at Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School, applicants must be successful in their audition process.
Audition process
Round 1: Online video audition
Should your child be successful in Round 1 of video auditions, you will be contacted by email by mid-Term 2 with the date and time of Round 2: Live Audition.
Round 2: Live audition
Only students who were successful from Round 1: Online video audition will be invited to Round 2: Live auditions, which includes a studio audition workshop.
Creative and Performing Arts options
Round 1: Online video audition
Requirements
- Present a 2 minute solo dance in the student's choice of style. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Asian Dance).
- When filming the performance, ensure the space is suitable for movement in a well lit environment.
- Students’ full body must be fully visible in the video at all times.
- Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (no costumes - please see below).
- Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for the audition.
Round 1: Online video audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:
- Girls: leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt
- Boys: track pants and a t-shirt
- No jewellery
- Hair tied back and off the face.
Round 2: Live studio audition
Only students who were successful from the Round 1: Online video audition will be invited to Round 2: Live studio audition.
Requirements
Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:
- Warm-up: Led by the instructor to prepare the body for movement.
- Technical Skills: Discussion and demonstration of essential technical skills specific to Asian Dance.
Round 2: Live studio audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:
- Girls: leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt
- Boys: track pants and a t-shirt
- No jewellery
- Hair tied back and off the face.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Asian Dance are:
- Expression and connection to the dance
- Technical Ability: Including demonstrated awareness of safe dance practice
- Engagement and dedication to the craft
- Ability to adapt and incorporate teacher feedback
- Overall presence and energy while performing.
Round 1: Online video audition
Requirements

- Discussion and demonstration of technical skills.
Round 2: Live studio audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:
- Girls: leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt
- Boys: track pants and a t-shirt
- No jewellery
- Hair tied back and off the face.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Dance Contemporary are:
- Performance quality
- Technical ability including demonstrated awareness of safe dance practice
- Self-discipline and commitment
- Ability to respond to teacher feedback
- Confidence and presentation.
Round 1: Online video audition
Requirements
- Present a 2 minute scripted monologue from a book or a play (no poetry, please). Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Drama).
- Ensure audio quality of the video is clear and that the camera is stationary (no zooming in and out).
- Record the audition in a room with neutral acoustics (not a large hall or outside).
- Student’s full body must be fully visible in the video at all times.
- Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (please see below).
- Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for the audition.
Round 1: Online video audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Drama attire:
- Drama blacks
- Character-appropriate costume.
Round 2: Live studio audition
Only students who were successful from the Round 1: Online video audition will be invited to Round 2: Live studio audition.
Requirements
Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:
- Teacher-led workshop exploring drama games and improvisation.
Round 2: Live studio audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Drama attire:
- Applicants should wear comfortable clothing
- Footwear should be track shoes or bare feet.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Drama are:
- Self-discipline, concentration and focus
- Movement skills
- Co-operation, creativity and imagination
- Ability to respond to teacher feedback
- Performance quality of scripted presentation.
Round 1: Online video audition
Requirements
- Record a 2 minute video showcasing your drumming skills. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Drumming).
- This can be accompanied or unaccompanied.
- If accompanied, ensure the balance between the soloist and the accompaniment is correct.
- Ensure audio quality of the video is clear.
- Record the audition in a room with neutral acoustics (not a large hall or outside).
- Student’s full body must be fully visible in the video at all times.
- Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (please see below).
- Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for the audition.
Round 1: Online video audition attire
Appropriate performance attire for your style of music or smart casual. Ensure your attire allows for ease of movement while playing the drums.
Round 2: Live studio audition
Only students who were successful from the Round 1: Online video audition will be invited to Round 2: Live studio audition.
Requirements
Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:
- Warm-up exercises to demonstrate technical drumming skills
- Rhythmic exercises to display timing and accuracy
- Performance of a short, prepared piece showcasing your drumming abilities.
Round 2: Live audition attire
Appropriate performance attire for your style of music or smart casual. Current school uniform is acceptable.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Drumming are:
- Performance quality: overall presentation and engagement.
- Technique: Intonation and rhythmic accuracy specific to drumming
- Dynamics and expressive techniques: Use of phrasing, articulation, and dynamics in your drumming
- Responsiveness: Ability to take and apply teacher feedback during the audition process.
Round 1: Online video audition
Requirements
- Present a 2 minute solo dance in a style of your choice, preferably showcasing a Middle Eastern Dance. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Middle Eastern Dance).
- When filming the performance, ensure the space is suitable for movement in a well-lit environment.
- Students’ full body must be fully visible in the video at all times.
- Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (no costumes - please see below).
- Please review the video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for the audition.
Round 1: Online video audition attire
Students should wear appropriate dance attire:
- Girls: Fitted top with a flowing skirt or dance pants
- Boys: Comfortable pants (e.g. track pants) and a fitted shirt
- No jewellery
- Hair must be tied back and off the face for clarity of movement.
Round 2: Live studio audition
Only students who were successful from the Round 1: Online video audition will be invited to Round 2: Live studio audition.
Requirements
Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:
- Warm-up: Led by the instructor to prepare the body for movement.
- Technical Skills: Discussion and demonstration of essential technical skills specific to Middle Eastern dance.
Round 2: Live studio audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:
- Girls: leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt
- Boys: track pants and a t-shirt
- No jewellery
- Hair tied back and off the face.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Middle Eastern Dance are:
- Performance quality: Expression and connection to the dance.
- Technical ability: Including demonstrated awareness of safe dance practice.
- Engagement and dedication to the craft.
- Ability to adapt and incorporate teacher feedback.

Round 1: Online video audition

- Record a 2 minute video of a live vocal or instrumental (guitar, piano, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion/drums) performance. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Music).
- This can be accompanied or unaccompanied.
- If accompanied, ensure the balance between the soloist and the accompaniment is correct.
- Ensure audio quality of the video is clear.
- Record the audition in a room with neutral acoustics (not a large hall or outside).
- Student’s full body must be fully visible in the video at all times.
- Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (please see below).

Requirements
Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:
- Warm-up exercises to demonstrate technical skill
- Singing a cappella and aurally identifying vocal passage
- Simple improvisation over 12 bar blues
- Perform a short, prepared song.
Round 2: Live audition attire
Appropriate performance attire for your style of music or smart casual. Current school uniform is acceptable.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Music are:
- Performance quality
- Technique, including intonation, rhythmic accuracy
- Dynamics and expressive techniques including phrasing and articulation
- Ability to respond to teacher feedback.
Round 1: Online video audition
Requirements
- Present a 2-minute solo dance or vocal in a Pasifika style or a style of your choice that reflects your understanding of Pasifika culture. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Pasifika Dance and Vocal).
- Ensure the space is suitable for movement and singing, well-lit, and free from distractions.
- Your full body must be visible in the video during the dance performance, and your face must be clearly visible during the vocal performance.
- Students should be dressed in appropriate attire (no costumes - please see below).
- Please review the video before submission to ensure that it is appropriate for the audition.
Round 1: Online video audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:
- Girls: leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt
- Boys: track pants and a t-shirt
- No jewellery
- Hair tied back and off the face.
Round 2: Live studio audition
Only students who were successful from the Round 1: Online video audition will be invited to Round 2: Live studio audition.
Requirements
Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:
- Warm-up: A physical warm-up led by the instructor to prepare the body for movement and vocal exercises to warm up the voice.
- Technical skills: Discussion and demonstration of essential technical skills specific to Pasifika Dance and Vocal performance, including rhythm and cultural expression in both dance and singing.
Round 2: Live audition attire
Students should wear appropriate Dance attire:
- Girls: leotard, tights and/or unitard and/or t-shirt
- Boys: track pants and a t-shirt
- No jewellery
- Hair tied back and off the face.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Pasifika Dance and Vocal are:
- Ability to express emotion and connect with the dance and vocal performance.
- Dedication and commitment to the craft of dance and vocal performance.
- Ability to incorporate and respond to teacher feedback.
- The energy and presence while performing, contributing to the overall impact of the performance.
Round 1: Online video audition
Requirements
- Record a video 3-6 minutes presenting a portfolio of your artworks including at least 5 contrasting pieces. Ensure you start the video by introducing yourself (full name) and the CAPA area you are auditioning for (Visual Arts).
- These artworks may be paintings, drawings, sculpture or ceramics.
- Record the audition video in a quiet room (not a large hall or outside).
- Please review the audition video before sending and ensure that it is appropriate for audition.
Presentation
Students should answer the following questions:
- What materials and processes / techniques have been used to produce their artworks?
- What ideas are being explored in their artworks?
Round 1: Online video audition attire
Students should wear appropriate attire for the Visual Arts presentation.
Round 2: Live studio audition
Only students who were successful from the Round 1: Online video audition will be invited to Round 2: Live studio audition.
Requirements
Students will take part in a teacher-led workshop:
- Students will be interviewed by the audition panel and asked to discuss the work included in their portfolio in detail.
Round 2: Live audition attire
Students should wear appropriate attire for Visual Arts. Current school uniform is acceptable.
General criteria that students will be assessed on for Visual Arts are:
- Quality and diversity of technical skill presented in the portfolio
- General knowledge of art
- Creativity and innovation
- Confidence and ability to respond to teacher feedback.
Requirements for Round 1: Online video audition
- Round 1: Online video audition videos are to be submitted to Granville South CAPA High School via YouTube.
- You must create a Google account, then a YouTube channel, to which the video will be uploaded.
- The video visibility setting should be set to unlisted so that the video can be shared with Granville South CAPA High School but will not appear in YouTube search results.
How to upload your audition video to YouTube

Go to www.youtube.com.

Log in to your YouTube account.

Click on the video icon at the top right-hand side of the window

Click ‘Upload video.’

Press ‘select files to upload’ to find the video file saved on your computer or simply ‘drag and drop’ the video file to the window.

Details - You need to ‘Title’ your video in the following format:
- Full name
- CAPA specific area you are audition for - Circus, Dance, Drama, Music or Visual Arts
- GSCAPAHS Audition

Audience – Ensure you click the radio button, ‘Yes, it’s made for kids’.

Click Next video elements will be displayed (not required), click Next again.

Visibility - Ensure the visibility setting is set to unlisted, then save.

- When your video has been successfully uploaded you will receive a URL for your video.
- Please copy the URL and paste it into the online application form in the required field.
- If the URL does not work, we will contact you via email and ask you to resubmit.
