English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In English, students learn about the study and use of the English language in its various textual forms. These encompass spoken, written and visual texts through which meaning is shaped, conveyed, interpreted and reflected. Complexity increases as students progress through their schooling.

Developing proficiency in English enables students to take their place as confident communicators; critical and imaginative thinkers; lifelong learners; and informed, active participants in Australian society. Their understanding of English through knowledge and skills acquisition is essential to their intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

In Year 11 and 12, the study of English is mandatory. Courses offered include:

  • English Extension 2
  • English Extension 1
  • English Advanced
  • English Standard
  • English Studies
  • English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D)
  • English Life Skills.

The study of English encourages students towards personal excellence in the use of the English language. The English teachers at Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School are committed to addressing the cognitive, social and emotional needs of all students in the school. For that reason we are active in all areas of school life.

We believe that English should not only concern itself with the development of skills in reading, writing, listening, viewing and speaking, but should also equip young people with the skills they need in order to articulate and reflect upon their concerns, their fears, their beliefs and their position in the world. We believe that a sound understanding of English is essential to success in all aspects of life. Our teaching and learning programs are aimed at not only all students being able to achieve their best but being challenged and extended as well.

Students at Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School engage with language and literature through their study of English.

Our dedicated and committed English staff foster a love of language and learning, enabling students to confidently communicate.

A passion for literature is developed in students throughout their school lives. Their love and appreciation of poetry and prose enables them to grow as individuals and develop a perspective for life.

Throughout their time at Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School, students study many genres. Film and media studies complement the study of Shakespearean texts within our English program.
