Subject selection process

This page will guide you through the subject selection process for Year 9 and 10 at Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School. You’ll find key dates, important steps, and helpful tips to ensure your subject choices set you up for success in Stage 5.

Why subject selection matter

Your elective choices in Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10) are important. You will study these subjects for two years, so it’s essential to make thoughtful and informed decisions.

When selecting your electives, consider the following:

Your interests

Choose subjects that genuinely interest you and that you are excited to learn more about. Enjoying your subjects will help keep you motivated and engaged.

Your ability

Select subjects that match your strengths and skills.

Choosing courses where you can succeed will help build your confidence and support your learning progress.

Your future goals

Think about how your subject choices may support your future pathways. These may include:

Continuing to Year 11 and 12 to complete the Higher School Certificate (HSC)
Leaving school after Year 10 with your Record of School Achievement (RoSA) and studying at TAFE
Leaving school after Year 10 with your RoSA and entering the workforce

Make your selections based on your own interests and goals. Choose subjects that are right for you, rather than following friends or focusing on who might be teaching them.

When does subject selection take place?

Subject selection begins in Term 3, 2026. The exact date will be confirmed.

The process will include the following steps:

Year meeting

Students will attend a year meeting where they will receive a presentation outlining the subject selection process and available elective options.

Information provided to students

Students will receive:

An elective subject handout
A subject selection form

Information provided to parents/carers

Parents and carers will receive the elective subject handout and subject selection form via email.

Discuss and complete choices

Students should discuss their elective options with their parents/carers before making a decision. Once a shared decision is reached, the subject selection form should be completed.

Submit the form

Completed subject selection forms must be returned to Mr Wark in A Block at school.

Stay organised

Keep your bookwork and worksheets neat and organised to support revision for tests and assessments.

Build strong study habits

After completing homework, summarise your class notes and look up key terms to deepen your understanding of course content.

Ask for help

Seek support from your teachers when completing tasks. Use their feedback to improve the quality of your work.

Organise your workspace

Maintain a tidy and organised study area. Keep a copy of your assessment calendar visible to help you stay on track.

Access support

Connect with your Year Adviser, the Student Services team, and school programs that support your wellbeing and resilience.

Get involved

Explore extra-curricular opportunities that support your learning and interests. This may include SRC, competitions, and performing arts ensembles.

Homework Centre

The Homework Centre runs every Monday afternoon in the school library, providing support with homework and assessments.

Stay committed

Remain at school until the end of Year 10 unless you have formal exemption or approval.
